Speaking - Part 5: Comparing and Persuading is a two-part task in the CELPIP Speaking Test where you first choose between two options and then persuade someone why your chosen option is better. This task assesses your ability to make comparisons, present logical arguments, and use persuasive language.

Structure

  • Part 1:
    • Time to Prepare: 60 seconds
    • Speaking Time: None (you only select an option)
  • Part 2:
    • Time to Prepare: 60 seconds
    • Speaking Time: 60 seconds

What to Expect

  • Part 1:
    • You will be presented with a scenario involving two options. Your task is to silently choose the option you prefer based on the information provided.
  • Part 2:

    • Decide which option you prefer based on the initial comparison. Remember, you don’t need to justify your choice in this part—just make the decision.

Part 2: Persuading the Listener

  1. Analyze the Opposing Option:

    • After receiving more details about the option you did not choose, think about its potential weaknesses compared to your choice.
  2. Organize Your Arguments:

    • Structure your response with a clear introduction, body, and conclusion:
      • Introduction: State your chosen option and briefly mention the opposing option.
      • Body: Present 2-3 strong reasons why your choice is better, using comparisons and specific examples.
      • Conclusion: Summarize your points and reaffirm why your choice is superior.
  3. Use Persuasive Language:

    • Employ phrases that clearly indicate comparison and persuasion, such as "better than," "more suitable," "less expensive," "more practical," "easier to manage," etc.
  4. Stay Focused and Relevant:

    • Keep your arguments focused on the scenario. Avoid going off on tangents or discussing irrelevant details.
  5. Practice Fluency and Clarity:

    • Speak confidently and clearly, with minimal hesitation. Practice delivering your points within the 60-second time limit to ensure your response is both complete and persuasive.

  • Overemphasizing Minor Details: Focus on the most compelling reasons rather than getting bogged down in less important aspects.
  • Unbalanced Comparison: Ensure you discuss both options fairly before concluding why your choice is better.
  • Lack of Specificity: Avoid vague statements. Use concrete examples and specific language to make your argument stronger.
